DFW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Here's a trivia question for your 2010 Conference trip: Is the Dallas-Fort Worth International (DFW) Airport located in Dallas or Fort Worth? Well, actually neither. The massive airport (with flights of 3 hours or less to every major city in the United States, and Canada) is located in the community of Grapevine, located west of Dallas and north of Fort Worth. In terms of traffic, DFW is the busiest in the state, third busiest in the United States, and sixth busiest in the world. DFW is also home base to American Airlines, the world's largest airline which operates eighty-four percent of all passenger traffic at the airport.

CAR RENTAL
Car rental agencies at the airport make it easy to get around the metro area. From each terminal's baggage area (lower level), look for the rental car signs. Follow these outside the terminal, where a shuttle labeled "Rental Car" will transport you to the rental car center, a 10-minute ride. These complimentary shuttles leave every five minutes. The major car-rental agencies, which have outlets at DFW and Love Field airports and at several addresses throughout the Metroplex, include Alamo (tel. 800/462-5266; www.alamo.com), Avis (tel. 800/230-4898; www.avis.com), Budget (tel. 800/527-0700; www.budget.com), Dollar (tel. 800/800-3665; www.dollar.com), Enterprise (tel. 800/736-8222; www.enterprise.com), Hertz (tel. 800/654-3131; www.hertz.com), National (tel. 800/227-7368; www.nationalcar.com), and Thrifty (tel. 800/847-4389; www.thrifty.com).
TAXI
Taxi service is readily available in each terminal at DFW International Airport. Proceed to the upper levels of each terminal and look for the uniformed Airport Ground Transportation personnel. Fares from the DFW airport to downtown Dallas cost $38; $43 if you're headed to downtown Fort Worth. The flat rate to and from the Dallas Central Business District is $40. You'll pay a $43 flat rate to and from the Fort Worth Central Business District. Taxis at Dallas Love Field are located in the upper levels across the street from the baggage claim wing of the main terminal building. Don't expect to hail a cab as you would in midtown Manhattan once you leave the airport, though you will find taxis parked in front of the bigger, upscale hotels and at the airports. Mostly, though, you'll need to call a cab. There are more than a dozen taxi companies, including Cowboy Cab Company (tel. 214/428-0202) and Yellow Checker (tel. 214/426-6262). Fares are $2.25 (initial drop) and 45¢ each additional quarter-mile. Extras might include a $2 extra passenger charge, a $3.60 airport exit fee, and a 52¢ airport drop-off fee.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
The Dallas Area Rapid Transit or DART bus line No. 310 serves the DFW Airport's remote North parking area Monday through Friday only. DART's bus line No. 408 provides service to the remote South lot 7 days per week. DART bus line No. 309 will take travelers from Dallas Love Field to downtown Dallas. The single-ride fare costs $1.25 per person; a one-day pass (with unlimited rides) costs $2.50.
DART also operates the Trinity Railway Express (TRE), a light rail service linking DFW International Airport with locations in Dallas and Ft. Worth from Monday through Saturday. The one way cost varies from $.50 to $2.25 per person, depending on where you get on. When TRE ends at airport parking areas, passengers can transfer onto airport terminal shuttles. For addtional rout and fare information for all of DART, call te. 214.979.1111, or log on to www.dart.org
BY CAR
Dallas is easy to get to from most major cities in the region, thanks to its location at the intersection of numerous Interstate Highways and US Highways. Coming from the south, I-45 is the major highway for travel between Houston and Dallas, while I-35 connects the city to Austin and San Antonio. If you come in on I-35 you need to keep in mind that, a few dozen miles both north and south of the "metroplex," the interstate splits into I-35W (which runs north/south through Fort Worth) and I-35E (the branch that runs north/south through Dallas). Miss the split and you'll wind up in a different city. Coming from the west, Dallas is reached by either I-20 on the south side or I-30 which comes directly into downtown. Both of these interstate highways approach Dallas from the east. I-20 comes from Shreveport, Louisiana and I-30 comes from Texarkana.
- From Houston and Galveston - Take IH 45 North.
- From El Paso - Take IH 10 East to IH 20 and then continue east on IH 20.
- From Corpus Christi - Take IH 37 North to San Antonio and IH 35 North to Dallas, or take US 77 North to Waco and IH 35 North to Dallas.
- From Midland/Odessa - Take IH 20 East.
- From Albuquerque - Take IH 40 East to Amarillo, US 287 East to Fort Worth and then IH 30 East to Dallas.
- From Amarillo - Take US 287 East to Fort Worth and then IH 30 East to Dallas.
- From Fort Worth - Take IH 30 East.
- From Wichita and Oklahoma City - Take IH 35 South and take the IH 35 East split at Denton.
- From Tulsa - Take US 75 South.
- From Little Rock - Take IH 30 West.
- From Shreveport - Take IH 20 West.
- From New Orleans - Take IH 10 West to Houston and then IH 45 North
However, once you are here, watch out for traffic. Traffic tends to go towards the city centers in the morning and away from the city centers in the evening. Major choke points are 75 South in the morning (what takes 20 minutes with no traffic, ends up taking 1-2 hours with traffic). I-635 near US-75 is also usually a mess since I-635 (being the beltway that runs all around Dallas) is an often-traveled road. Also watch out for I-35E southbound in the mornings. US-75 is also called "Central" or "Central Expressway", and turns into I-45 just south of Downtown. I-635 is sometimes called LBJ, which stands for Lyndon B Johnson. There are two branches of I-35. I-35 splits into I-35W at Denton (30 miles north of Dallas) through Fort Worth to Hillsboro (50 miles south of Dallas), and I-35E that runs from Denton through Dallas to Hillsboro. After I-35W and I-35E reach Hillsboro, they simply rejoin as I-35.
